Associate Membership Application Information The 2007 Selection Board will meet at The Art Workers' Guild, 6 Queen Square, London WC1 on 23 June 2007 at 11am. The Board is composed of all Fellows of the Society, plus six (6) Associates, appointed by Council in accordance with Article 12 of the Articles of Association. According to Article 8, Associates (AMGP) shall be elected from those who are Ordinary members of the Society and must be persons of not less than twenty five years of age and able to demonstrate to the Selection Board that she/he is competent in designing and making or in designing and supervising making in the craft. Applications for Craft Associate status (CAMGP) shall be elected from those who are Ordinary members of the Society and must be persons of not less than twenty five years of age and working in the said craft as a craftsperson and able to demonstrate competence in stained glass execution. They shall be other than designers and therefore ineligible to apply for AMGP status but whose work is deemed sufficiently outstanding. Members who have been elected as Associates and who have paid their annual subscription to the society are entitled to use the designation AMGP or CAMGP as appropriate. As reported in the Newsletter, March 2001, the Selection Board will ask the following questions when looking at submissions to establish whether or not the above competencies have been demonstrated: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Does the applicant demonstrate a creative approach to designing for the medium? Does the applicant demonstrate a clear understanding of what is required of a new design in terms of treatment of the subject matter in question? Is the design suited to its architectural setting? ie. Has the applicant taken into account surrounding scale/architecture/other windows, etc? Do the choice and use of materials show the necessary judgement and skill? If glass painting has been used, is it of an acceptable standard? Does the applicant exhibit intellectual and practical rigour in the design and manufacture of work, whether the individual makes the work or the manufacture is supervised? Are the projects submitted safe and fit for their purpose? Would you as a Fellow or Associate member be happy to recommend this applicant to the general public? 7. 8. Please notify C Benyon at least 1 month in advance if you are intending to submit an application for 2007 and whether you are intending to submit your designs in electronic form (jpgs or .ppt files) on a CD-ROM. Applications received after the deadline may be admitted at the Convenor's discretion, but may be deferred until the next meeting of the Selection Board, which will normally only occur annually. PLEASE NOTE: `The Selection Board may request further information from the applicant or other sources, invite the applicant for interview, arrange a site visit or request any other material in support of an application, which, according to its judgement, is relevant to its considerations. Applicants will normally be advised in writing of the outcome of their applications within 28 days of the meeting of the Selection Board. The decision of the Selection Board will be final and no correspondence will be entered into other than the written notification of the outcome.' A LIST OF 10 STAINED GLASS WORKS ­ 20 TO 30 SLIDES (BY PRIOR NOTIFICATION TO THE CHAIRMAN, THESE MAY BE SUBMITTED AS ELECTRONIC IMAGES (JPGs OR POWERPOINT FILES) ON A CD-ROM) At least the first five works should be in architectural settings. State the type of commission, the name and address of the site, and whether or not it can be viewed. If it is in a private building, supply a name and contact number if access is possible. If any information is confidential, it should be listed separately and marked clearly `CONFIDENTIAL'. Specify the location of your window within the building, preferably with the aid of a sketch plan, especially if there is other glass in the building. For each project, give details of the design brief, if relevant, and the dimensions, width first. Describe the materials and techniques used. State clearly your role ­ whether you are the designer and maker or designer and supervisor of execution. If fabricated by someone else, name the person and/or studio responsible. Add letters for the slide details, ie: 1a, 1b, etc., listing them in the order they are to be viewed. Describe each slide briefly. Indicate on the slide itself which way up it should be viewed. If you feel it would be beneficial, you may bring a full-scale cartoon and/or additional materials of work in another medium to show to the Selection Board. This should be discussed with the Convenor in advance of the meeting. Craft Associate applicants must specify his/her precise involvement in the execution of the work. They must specify the Studio/Firm/Designer with whom the commissions were carried out. 2. A LIST OF SCALE DESIGNS SUBMITTED Associate applicants only Please describe briefly and cross reference them to the list of works, using the same numbers as in 1 above. 3. DETAILS OF PANEL TO BE SUBMITTED Optional for Associates, compulsory for Craft Associates This should be no bigger than 2' x 2', and you should include its scale design and details of your involvement in its fabrication. List materials and techniques used. Craft Associates applicants must include a signed undertaking that it is her/his own work. Additional materials such as cartoons, drawings or photos of other artistic works in another medium may additionally be submitted by arrangement with the Convenor. N.B. This panel will need to be delivered and collected on the day the Selection Board meets at the Art Workers' Guild in London, unless you have made alternative arrangements with the convenor. Responsibility for transport and insurance rests with the applicant. 4. YOUR CV: DETAILS OF EDUCATION, TRAINING & WORK EXPERIENCE Indicate dates, types of study, qualifications earned, names of institutions, studios and stained glass teachers. Information about training will not affect the outcome of your application but is of interest to our archivists. Please do include it. Indicate any apprenticeships and studios worked for, with relevant dates and/or dates of freelance practice.
