Francis Spear 29 April –26 July 2013
A retrospective exhibition of stained glass panels and designs by eminent twentieth-century stained glass artist, Francis Spear (1902-79)
FROM THE STACKS: Hidden Treasures from the Collection
This exhibition in our newly acquired display cabinets brings together several stained glass panels designed by John Hungerford Pollen, and made by Powell & Sons from the reserve collection which previously formed the large wheel window depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The windows come from the west front of the Church of the Assumption in Rhyl, North Wales and date to 1863. The display features new information about their original architectural context.
Flexible Display – Changes to Main Gallery
As a result of the new flexible displays, generously funded by the Headley Trust and the EEDA (East of England Development Association), we have been able to display an additional ten panels of stained glass previously in the reserve collection. Panels on display for the first time include some new glass pieces by Francis Spear donated by his son, Simon Spear.
