The image shows a lead milling mark on a section of old window lead (10mm flat; narrow heart)
Milling marks were cut into one or (rarely) both of the wheels of the lead-vice (mill) and so appear at regular intervals along the heart of the lead. The diameter of the wheel can therefore be calculated from the distance between the marks.
Maurice Drake recorded the mark J : S 1618 in his History of English Glasspainting. Others have been found in excavations in New England, and I have recorded 25 examples dating between 1673 (Faversham) and 1787 (Yalding in Kent).
English Heritage published a study in the 1980's and there have been at least two write-ups in The Journal over the years.
When old leaded lights are broken up or restored it is well worth taking a close look at the lead to see if one of these little bits of history can be found.
Countless examples must have been thrown away as scrap over the years, and they are now quite rare.
