Coinciding with Brian Clarke’s 70th birthday, A Great Light opened at Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery on 9 June 2023. The exhibition, presenting the artist’s unmatched contribution to the continuous development of the stained glass medium, includes a selection of works made since 2002.

The centrepiece of this exhibition is a spectacular large-scale glass artwork, a 42-square-metre wall of mouth-blown glass titled Ardath, meaning ‘Blooming Meadow’ in Hebrew. This installation, an expansive field of flowering meadow motifs in etched glass, bathes the gallery in light and colour. Its effect is mirrored by a wall of 210 of Clarke’s collages, uniformly framed and hung to form a vast grid, spanning the entire length of the gallery. A selection of these works is reimagined in stained glass in the large-scale ‘Tributes’ series as well as the ‘Pendants’ plinth-mounted panels. Alongside a selection of the ‘Vespers’ watercolours, and their stained glass variants, the ‘Kabinettscheiben‘, these works demonstrate the vital crosspollination of Clarke’s works on paper and stained glass.

The exhibition at Newport Street Gallery, London has been extended until 31 December. The gallery is open Tuesday – Sunday, 10am – 6pm (check before visiting). Admission is free.
