Artistic Perspectives on Environmentalism in Stained Glass

Fellow artists and enthusiasts, please join us for another exciting event and delve into the inspiration behind six of our members’ panels from the Inspired by William Morris exhibition. Explore the relationship between the stained glass artist and their personal approach to environmentalism, their style of visual language and chosen glass techniques.

Arts & crafts pioneer and environmentalist William Morris, was concerned about the possible trajectory of the industrial revolution over a hundred years ago. Considering how we are still challenged by similar threats today, we thought it would be fitting to showcase the artist’s varying environmental observations, how they chose to engage the viewer and what revelations they had in the process.

To set the tone, the webinar will be opened by two specialist guest speakers – Tim Batchelor, Assistant Curator at Tate Britain, who will acknowledge how art can engage the public on complex environmental issues, such as ecology and species loss and Nadia Shaikh, land justice campaigner and Co-director of Right to Roam, who will speak about her extensive experience working with creatives to promote environmental causes. Gain insights into how exploring environmental themes and collaborating with non-for-profits can inspire public awareness and positive change!

Julia Gonyou, will be chairing the event and will provide a compilation of member’s tips on how one can make their studio practice more eco-friendly, please email all tips great and small to either artist@bsmgp.org.uk or DM our instagram page @artistswgroup_bsmgp. Remember to take the opportunity to engage with these purposeful artists and make inquiries of your own during the post-lecture Q&A.

We were extremely impressed by the range of skill and contemplation displayed by all participants. You have until the end of the year to submit your panel for the online exhibition.

This event is a continuation from our previous Artistic Perspectives on Glass Painting and Artistic Perspectives on Colour in Stained Glass webinars, organised by the Artists Working Group on behalf of the British Society of Master Glass Painters. All proceeds will go to the group’s upcoming educational initiatives.

The Zoom event is on Thursday 29 May at 6:30pm GMT. Members pay only £4.25 (£5.00 full price) for the Zoom lecture.
