Recorded Lecture with John Edwards

Christopher Webb – Popular, Prolific, Profound

We were delighted to welcome back John Edwards who gave our spring lecture in 2020 just before the first Lockdown. He has kindly recorded the lecture for those who were unable to attend.

Christopher Webb was a sought-after and highly regarded stained glass artist during a career that ran from 1920 to 1964. But since his death his reputation has fallen. This lecture, by looking at the scope and variety of his more than 400 windows, assesses his legacy. It is informed by the existence of a large number of his design sketches and full-size cartoons and builds on some of the themes explored in John’s article for the 2019 Journal of Stained Glass: Scenes of Everyday Life – Christopher Webb’s Benedicite windows. It suggests that there is much more to his work than the description of ‘traditionalist’ implies.

The recording is free so we encourage you to give a voluntary donation of £5.00 to the BSMGP Trust so we can continue our education work. Add it to your basket at the checkout.
