A guest editorial by Dr Nicola Gordon Bowe on recent exhibitions and publications revealing differences in late-19th-century and early 20th-stained glass in Ireland, Britain and Europe. Groundbreaking studies of the development of stained glass in Poland along with a complete glazing history of the model church of the Ecclesiological Society: All Saints’, Margaret Street Church in London and the successive schemes of 20th-century stained glass in Liverpool Cathedral. Histories of the studios of Christopher Webb in St Albans and Alfred Leonard Pike in Redditch, as well as Guido Nincheri in Montreal with a methodology for recording stained glass using the latter’s archive. Part 2 of 1881 Census records for London glass-painters and a report on the important work of NADFAS Church recorders. New stained glass commissions include Douglas Hogg’s Newman window for Oriel College, Oxford and Ruth Taylor Jacobson’s Masks for a Purimspiel. Technical Inquiry explores the science of glass, plus 16 book reviews.
