Vol. XXVI (2002)

2002 ISBN 0 9540457 26 232 pages, over 100 colour illustrations

Medieval stained glass is explored in articles on West Country glazier John Godwin of Wells, glass from Winchester Cathedral in Australia, and Tudor propaganda surrounding depictions of Prince Edward (one of the ‘princes in the Tower’) and possibly Richard III in stained glass at Coldridge, Devon. A reappraisal of the English Civil War window at Farndon Church, Cheshire includes a full analysis of the weaponry shown and British glass painters appearing in the 1881 and 1901 Census are recorded and analysed. 20th-century stained glass includes artist Frank Brangwyn’s experiments in the medium, Hugh Easton’s career in stained glass and mid-century Icelandic windows by sculptor Gerdur Helgadottir. Contemporary practice includes Ruth Kersley’s major scheme of stained glass for the new Jewish Free School Synagogue in London, plus BSMGP members’ New Work Portfolio, recent prizes from the Worshipful Company of Glaziers, as well as an exhibition review of 'Gothic: Art for England 1400-1547' at the V&A and 28 book reviews. Obituaries are published for Professor Roy Newton OBE and Canon Maurice Ridgway FSA.
