Vol. XXVIII (2004) Special Issue: America Issue

2004 ISBN 978 0 9540457 4 2 224 pages, over 120 colour illustrations, many large scale

A Special Issue devoted to a wide range of American stained glass with nine articles covering: Victorian windows by Donald MacDonald of Boston; John La Farge’s Patent for American opalescent glass; five turn-of-the-century Pittsburgh stained glass artists including J. Horace Rudy, Charles J. Connick, William Willet, George W. Sotter and Lawrence B. Saint; attitudes in America to stained glass; the clever business practice of James Hogan of James Powell & Sons organising British exports to the USA in the interwar years; and Peter Cormack on Charles J. Connick’s Arts & Crafts philosophy of stained glass. In her guest editorial Julie Sloan muses on attempts to write the history of American stained glass. Contemporary Practice features the powerful and moving stained glass memorial for 9/11 by British artist Lynn Rivers, an introduction to the intriguing stained glass of American artist Judith Schaechter and much more. The issue is rounded off with a report on the new CVMA website, a fully-illustrated account of the BSMGP exhibition '30cm2', recent stained glass at auction and twelve book reviews. Obituaries are published for our former Vice President Alan Younger FMGP and for Michael Wynne.
