XLIX (2025) The Journal of Stained Glass

2025 ISBN-13 978 1 9169040 5 7 288 pages, 280 illustrations, most in colour, many large-scale

A bountiful exploration of stained glass from Britain to India and the US to the Ukraine, from late-Georgian art to 21st-century practice and conservation, lavishly illustrated throughout.

A thoughtful guest editorial by Joseph A. Nuttgens looks back over a life spent in the field while also considering that of his father, Joseph Eddie Nuttgens. New historical research begins with Jeff Hopewell’s careful documentation of the European print sources used in the prolific ecclesiastical work of David Evans and his sons between the 1820s and 1860s. Peter Cormack uncovers the complex and poignant story of a hitherto unrecorded window by the foremost stained glass artist of the Arts & Crafts era, Christopher Whall. Zac Bleicher gives a comprehensive introduction to the extraordinary art and craft of Chicago artist Edgar Miller in the 1920s and ‘30s, whose dynamic stained glass deserves wide recognition. BSMGP librarian Alan Brooks chronicles the successful career of Moira Forsyth whose distinctive stained glass spans the 1930s to 1970s; he provides a Gazetteer to encourage visits. Keith New's vibrant mid-20th-century stained glass is studied by Diana Coulter in a detailed investigation of the artist’s once lost – and now found – work for St Stephen Walbrook in the City of London.

For Research & Methodology, David Cook discusses coverage of contemporary Gothic Revival stained glass by ecclesiologist T. Francis Bumpus in articles published in The Architect between 1899 and 1901; and provides a helpful index to the architects, designers, makers, churches, locations and subject matter he mentions.

Contemporary Practice pays tribute to the remarkable body of architectural stained glass by the late Sir Brian Clarke with an article by Peter Cormack reflecting on the artist’s ‘Gothic Modernism’. Recent stained glass commissions and exhibition pieces by the BSMGP’s Fellows and Associates are celebrated in the New Work Portfolio.

For Technical Inquiry, Sarah Knighton analyses lime and mortars in stained glass installation with discussions of their history, types, composition and current practical applications in the conservation of stained glass in historic buildings. BSMGP Vice President and Heritage Crafts Lifetime Achievement Award winner Alf Fisher looks back on a groundbreaking 1990s project to kickstart stained glass conservation education in India with a rousing and entertaining account of its challenges and rewards, set against a backdrop of Victorian architectural landmarks.

Oksana Kondratyeva reports on inspiring stained glass restoration in Ukraine after ongoing devastating Russian attacks, with a focus on the historic Kyiv National Art Gallery and project to restore its decorative roof lantern. In-depth reviews cover recent books on stained glass and obituaries are included for Sir Brian Clarke, the first-ever artist to be knighted primarily for his work in stained glass, and for Tim Lewis, the influential stained glass tutor and department head of Swansea College of Art.
